About

Why the Mindful CFO?

You know what’s the worst?

When you try so hard to grow your business in a more organized and efficient way —but you’re not sure what you should focus on first, you don’t have the knowledge of the best systems and processes to implement, and you don’t know how to read your financial statements to get them to reveal what’s actually happening in your business, leaving you totally frustrated and probably embarrassed.

What’s an entrepreneur to do?

It doesn’t matter that you hired a bookkeeper recommended by your entrepreneur friends. And bought some cool software that was supposed to interpret your numbers for you. And read every business book you could get your hands on!  (Though you could probably teach an MBA class by now.)

Alas, the dirty, low-down truth is this: Entrepreneurs will always struggle with interpreting the financials and metrics of their business in order to make good business decisions, throwing darts trying one tactic after another, getting frustrated with their lack of results, feeling helpless against market forces, and finally feeling like they don’t have what it takes and look at selling or dissolving their business and going back to the job they hated.

Does it have to be this way?

The Plight of the Entrepreneur

Here’s what I often see happen with my clients:

  • They hire bookkeepers and accountants who can book entries or do their taxes but don’t have a clue how to help them run a business.
  • They avoid looking at their financials because it seems too complex and they have “better” (aka – easier) things to do in running their business.
  • They try to save money on advisors by reading business literature or taking the advice of friends (who have little business experience) and blindly try to implement what they learn, not understanding the bigger picture.

And you know what that means?

  • Getting short-sighted “bean counter” information instead of long-term strategic advice.
  • They don’t realize that their margins are slipping and their bank balances are dwindling.
  • They keep hitting the same walls, wondering why what used to work doesn’t work any longer.

This is precisely why I started The Mindful CFO Fractional CFO Services: because I know that I can fix all of that and more.

Why you need The Mindful CFO

The Mindful CFO is a fractional CFO that specializes in showing you the simple steps to gain deeper insight into your business in less than a week so you can focus on what’s important and make better decisions, and I know three things to be true:

(1) You don’t need to spend a lot of money on a full-time CFO;

(2) You don’t have to give away part of your company to investors who will tell you how they want you to run your company;

(3) You don’t have to be a “numbers person” to use your company’s financial statements to make effective, actionable decisions.

But what do I have?

Insight

Insight is the one thing that pulls all the bits of data together to make better decisions.  Insight comes from years of experience with many different companies learning what works and what doesn’t.  Without insight, data is just data.

Because that’s the thing in business, isn’t it? All you need to do is make the right decisions at the right time and implement them, then your business is booming, your bank balances grow, your customer base expands, and you can sleep at night knowing that you’re doing the right things.

That’s why The Mindful CFO was developed. At first blush, this seems strange: What does mindfulness have to do with being a CFO?  Everything.  If you’re not making mindful decisions in your business, your business will run you.  The concept here is simple: you don’t have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a full-time CFO, you don’t have to give away part of your company, and you don’t have to go it alone.

All you need to do is to work with a strategic partner with insight into what you’re going through who can help you put all the pieces together effectively.

Why I started the Mindful CFO

I’m Paige and I’m the founder of The Mindful CFO.

It all started in Boston where I began my career with Coopers & Lybrand (totally dating myself as this firm merged with Price Waterhouse eons ago to become Pricewaterhouse Coopers).  I was an auditor who worked with emerging and middle-market companies.  I loved working with start-ups, quickly growing companies who worked with private equity and other investors to rocket their growth, and mid-sized (up to $200 million) public companies.

I loved helping owners and management find more efficient ways to run their businesses (I’ve never been the pure “bean counter” type).  I enjoyed helping these folks plan for their future, not just review their past (financials).

After seven years there, I realized that life could be much more interesting working inside these kinds of companies, making a real difference, instead of only being an occasional advisor.

Over the ensuing years, I’ve been the CFO of public companies, non-profits, equity-backed ventures, privately-owned growing companies, and new start-ups.  In many cases, I was hired to turn the company around.  In only one case was I called (on a contract basis) too late to save the ship.  Every other time, I was able to make decisions and take action to make the companies profitable and, where the owners wanted it, get them sold.

I have learned that these decades of experience can prove invaluable to entrepreneurs working hard to move their businesses forward.  Even a half-hour consultation can open their eyes to new ways of seeing the same old problem and moving toward a solution.  Financial statements tell me a story.  They’re much more than pages of numbers.

Getting senior-level CFO advice doesn’t have to cost a fortune.  It’s not just for the VC-backed companies with millions in the bank.  On a fractional basis, you can pay for only a few hours a month of critical advice to help you make the right decisions and ensure that the ship keeps sailing.

That’s where The Mindful CFO comes in.

I’m personally inviting you to a 5-day “Give Me Some Insight” challenge where I’ll walk you through five things you can do today to see your business in a new light, make better decisions, and not have to pay tens of thousands of dollars for the insights.
